Acme Café is located in the historic Paris Block. Built in 1907 as the Eastern Building, its retail space was occupied by Pierre Paris and Sons Shoes in 1919. The Paris family sold logging boots here for over 60 years.
Hastings Street and Gastown were once the core of downtown Vancouver’s retail and entertainment district. From Abbott Street to Main Street, Hastings was “Theatre Row” with numerous theatres — both film and live. The area was a working-class neighbourhood filled with diners, clothing and shoe shops, and markets, its hub being the iconic Woodward’s Department Store.
The restoration of the Hastings corridor and its historic buildings, including Woodward’s, was something we wanted to be a part of. Acme Café opened in April 2010 in the newly salvaged and restored Paris Block. Our goal was and is to create a space that feels grounded in its community, a spot that might have been there in the area’s heyday.
